At the Minnesota Discovery Center, the Hall of Geology tells the story of how the Iron Range came to be. Spanning ancient oceans, mountain building, dinosaurs and glaciers, the exhibit traces millions of years of regional history that can be difficult to picture, let alone understand.
The challenge was to make that scale of time feel approachable without simplifying the science behind it. Rather than presenting the story as one continuous timeline, the exhibit breaks Minnesota’s geological history into a series of focused chapters, giving visitors distinct moments to enter, understand and connect along the way.
Illustrated environments, interpretive graphics and fossil displays bring those missing chapters into view, moving between landscape, scale and scientific detail to create one cohesive experience. Dense information becomes something visitors can explore visually, while each section builds toward a broader understanding of the forces that shaped the Iron Range as it exists today.
